REQUIREMENT LIST
- 30cm Black fabric for the background of the sunflower. Choose a fabric with a tone-on-tone or mottled or hand-dyed print to give movement. A solid black fabric is too flat
- Fat quarter of pale yellow hand-dyed or mottled fabric
- Fat quarter of mid yellow hand-dyed or mottled fabric
- Fat quarter of dark yellow/orange hand-dyed or mottled fabric
- Fat quarter each of two different green hand-dyed or mottled fabric
- 10in (25cm) square red brown/orange hand-dyed or mottled fabric
- 10in (25cm) square dark brown solid, hand-dyed or mottled fabric for the base of the flower centre
- 30cm of black fabric for the rod pocket and the facings or binding if you prefer
- 30cm backing fabric
- 30cm low loft batting
- Scraps of batting for the padding of the centre
- DMC Perle 5 cotton in dark grown, red brown and golden tan for bobbin work in the centre Examples of colours to use 938 ultra dark coffee brown, 900 dark burnt orange and 436 tan. Bring any perle threads you may have in your collection, remembering that you will need
- Threads for thread painting bring an assortment of rayon, polyester and cottons in different shades of yellows, oranges, red browns, greens. Bobbin thread to blend with your backing fabric, preferably not black.
- Black threads for quilting
- One reel of 32 gauge gold beading wire for the 3D leaves
- Fusible webbing
- Extra fine point sharpie black marker
- Sewing machine needles – Top stitch 80
- Sewing machine in good working order, sewing machine manual
- 2 full bobbins of bobbin fill or 50wgt cotton thread to matching the backing
- Spare empty bobbins
- Spare bobbin case if you have a front loading machine (only if you have one)
- Rotary cutter mat and quilter’s ruler
- Craft and fabric scissors
- Flower head pins
Techniques used in the class will be fusible applique, thread painting 3D leaf making with wire and bobbin work.
The skills required to take this class are experience in free machining, thread painting or free machine quilting. Excellent knowledge of your machine as we will be playing with tension and loading perle thread into the bobbin. If you machine does not allow you to do bobbin work the centre can be worked by hand and still get a wonderful effect.
