NB This is an example of Merelyn's work, not the exact project you will be working on.
This workshop is designed to teach the technique of needle-turned hand appliqué, applying it to a variety of shapes, and the method of planning and preparing an appliqué block.
We will be working on a 15 ½” (39.5cm) block inspired by Margaret Preston. Your block could become a cushion cover, a wall hanging or even a larger quilt.
The background fabric will be quilters muslin (easy to get if extra is needed) in either cream or black, depending on whether you want a subtle or dramatic effect.
Requirements:
As this is only a one day workshop Merelyn will supply fabric for the block background already marked out. Please let Robyn know whether you want a black or cream background when you book the class. robfwilliams@bigpond.com (cost included in class fee)
- Piecemaker No.12 applique needles or similar
- Thread to match fabrics
- Scissors, pins, thimble etc.
- Blue water erasable marking pen
- Marking pencil for dark fabric (Karisma fabric propelling pencil with replaceable leads is excellent)
- Fabric: The softer and finer the fabric for hand appliqué the better, but I use homespun a lot. Wash the fabric beforehand. For the day you will only require red (Sturt’s Desert Pea), cream (Flannel Flowers), and gold. You can choose the others when you see the block in the flesh. Time will restrict our output on the day. Solid colours are best.
