SCQ 2011 Retreat Illawarra

I went to Kiama for a leisurely lunch with ex-workmates yesterday and as our lunch was at the Blue Diamond (part of the complex which also houses the Sebel) I took along my camera. Here is a bit of an overview of the beautiful spot we have chosen for your retreat next year.

The complex surrounds the old the beautifully restored 1889 heritage-listed bluestone Infants' School building which is used as a conference and meeting centre. This building is loved by the community and there was lots of discussion and even some protest to ensure that it was maintained rather than be demolished and lost. A major court case in 2008 saw a compromise in the development plan and the hotel, (then the Mercure)was allowed to continue their renovation of the building which includes the Orry-Kelly Gallery to display local art. The resort building houses waterfront accommodation, a brassiere restaurant and bar as well as a Thai Restaurant.
Here are a few views of the town I took yesterday showing the Terrace shops, historic Post Office building, the harbour and the lighthouse on Blowhole Point. There are always pelicans waiting for the fishing boats to come in and clean their catch and they make a great foreground for a shot of Black Beach which is directly in front of the Sebel complex.
The seaside markets are held at Black Beach once a month but the weekend of our retreat being the 4th weekend will see the Produce markets on that day.
They start 8am and go until 1pm. This is what the local rag says about them....
Inspect the fantastic array of stalls specializing in fish, meats, fruits, nuts, vegetables, cheeses, wines and other specialty foods.
Enjoy cooking classes, tastings, sauces and condiments. Sample the home-grown, home-made difference and save direct from the supplier.
A tasty experience for all!

Kiama is not always calm and sunny - sometimes it is STORMY - this is what it looks like with waves in the harbour and the with the blowhole working flat out.
I wouldn't recommend a swim at the surf beach when it's like this!

Hopefully Black Beach will look like this on 26th and 27th of March next year.
